To mark the resumption of academic activities for the 2018/2019 academic session at the Dominican Institute, an Inaugural Mass of the Holy Spirit was celebrated in the Chapel by the Chancellor of the University, ably represented by his Vicar, Very Rev. Fr Felix Onemeghie, OP.
In attendance at this opening event held on October 2, 2018 were both staff and the incoming students of Theology as well as invited guests.
The opening lecture for the academic session was delivered by Chief Anthony Idigbe, SAN at the Tom and Carolyn Walker Hall of the DI. In a lecture titled, “Rethinking Education and National Development in Nigeria,” the guest speaker, a thorough-bred legal practitioner, critically analyzed the current situation of university education in Nigeria. University education in Nigeria will contribute more positively to national development when, not only access to university education is provided by licensing more universities, but also by institutionalizing adequate funding systems, development-oriented curricula, and the forms of entrepreneurial culture draw out the hidden potentials in students.
The incoming students were welcomed by the Dean of Faculty, Fr. Benjamin Kwaghgba, O.P, who equally explained the nature, scope and the Thomistic emphasis on theological studies at the Institute. The institute remains vision-driven towards creating a center of excellence for quality Theological education.
