Priestly Life and Ministry (PLM) workshop is a programme that draws its inspiration from the Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation of Pope Saint John Paul II, Pastores Dabo Vobis, a document that speaks to the question of the formation of priests in our contemporary context. Observing the interconnectedness of the four areas of priestly formation, namely human formation (the basis of all priestly formation), spiritual, intellectual, and pastoral formations, John Paul II exhorts agents of priestly formation and the candidates for priestly ministry especially to offer “heartfelt cooperation to this work of formation” (no. 69).
This is the second edition of this workshop for candidates for diaconate and priestly ordinations. More specifically, it is a workshop specially organized for candidates who are closely approaching elevation to the Order of Deacons and Priests. PLM workshop takes to heart the promotion of pastoral training for the salvation of souls. Accordingly, participants in this workshop will be “diligently instructed in those matters which are particularly linked to the sacred ministry,” (Optatam Totius, no. 19) as a way of building their capacity for active ministry in the church.
In this light, PLM workshop seeks to draw resource persons from different fields relevant to priestly formation in our time to help our future priests appreciate the contemporary challenges of priestly ministry and to help them become true shepherds of the flock of Christ in whatever apostolate they are assigned to undertake after priestly ordination.
Bearing in mind that pastoral formation develops by means of mature reflection and practical application (cf. Pastores Dabo Vobis, no. 57), this second edition of PLM Workshop will focus on “Capacity Building for Today’s Pastoral Ministry.” Our well experienced resource persons will be building the capacities of participants in effective parish administration and project management. They will also be guiding participant through understanding their human sexuality and developing emotional intelligence for pastoral life. Participants will be exposed to pastoral issues and challenges in marriage and family life as well as the issues and challenges in spiritual direction. They will equally be reminded of church teachings and laws concerning sexual offences and related matters.
The venue of the workshop is the Tom and Carolyn Walker Hall of the Dominican University, Ibadan. Prospective candidates for the workshop who do not have a community of residence in Ibadan may indicate on the online registration form whether or not they wish to be provided an accommodation for the duration of the workshop. The cost of accommodation will be sent directly to the candidates on request.
Cost of participation has been subsidized by the Society for Vocations Support founded by the Order of Preachers, Province of St. Joseph the Worker, Nigeria and Ghana. Accordingly, prospective participants are to pay a total sum of ten thousand (10,000) naira only as fee for participation at the workshop. This is payable to the following account number:
